Tube Bundle for Oil Heater (S&T Heat Exchanger)

A tube bundle is the core heat transfer component of an S&T (Shell-and-Tube) heat exchanger used in oil heaters. Its primary function is to enable efficient heat exchange between the oil (the fluid being heated, typically the shell-side fluid) and the heat source fluid (e.g., steam, hot water, or thermal oil, usually the tube-side fluid).

In an S&T heat exchanger for oil heating, the tube bundle acts as the "heat transfer bridge" between two fluids:

Tube-side fluid: The high-temperature heat source (e.g., steam at 180°C) flows inside the tubes, releasing heat through the tube walls.

Shell-side fluid: The oil to be heated (e.g., heavy fuel oil, lubricating oil) flows around the outer surface of the tube bundle, absorbing heat from the tube walls to reach the target temperature (e.g., 120°C for viscosity reduction).

The tube bundle’s structure directly determines the heat transfer efficiency—more contact area between the tubes and oil, and optimized fluid flow paths, result in faster, more energy-efficient oil heating.

Maintenance Practices

Regular Cleaning:

- Mechanical cleaning: Use high-pressure water jets (for soft fouling) or brush systems (for hard deposits) on the shell side.

- Chemical cleaning: Circulate alkaline or solvent-based cleaners (compatible with tube material) to dissolve oil residues (avoid corrosive chemicals).

Leak Detection: Perform pressure tests (e.g., hydrostatic testing of the tube side) or use ultrasonic flaw detection to identify pinholes or cracked tubes.

Baffle Inspection: Check for baffle deformation or loose fasteners (replace damaged baffles to prevent tube vibration).

Tube Replacement: Remove and replace severely fouled, corroded, or leaking tubes (via tube pulling tools for expanded tubes).
