UNS S32750 Removable Tube Bundle for Harsh Refinery Applications
Time :Jul 15, 2026

A Super Duplex UNS S32750 tube bundle is a high-performance replacement or new-build component used in refinery shell and tube heat exchangers where ordinary stainless steel can no longer provide enough corrosion resistance or mechanical strength. Refinery operating conditions are often aggressive. Heat exchangers may handle chloride-containing water, sour process streams, hydrocarbon mixtures, cooling water, seawater, condensate, amine solution, or high-temperature process fluids. Under these conditions, tube failure can cause leakage, contamination between fluids, unplanned shutdown, safety risk, and costly maintenance. For this reason, many refinery projects select Super Duplex UNS S32750 when longer service life and higher reliability are required.

UNS S32750 Removable Tube Bundle for Harsh Refinery Applications

UNS S32750, also known as Super Duplex 2507, has a mixed austenitic and ferritic microstructure. This duplex structure gives the material a strong combination of corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Compared with standard 304 or 316L stainless steel, Super Duplex S32750 offers much better resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and erosion-corrosion. This is especially valuable in refinery heat exchangers exposed to seawater cooling, brackish water, high-chloride process water, or wet corrosive streams. Its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content gives it strong localized corrosion resistance, making it suitable for demanding refinery environments.

In a shell and tube heat exchanger, the tube bundle is the core heat transfer part. It normally includes tubes, tube sheets, baffles, tie rods, spacers, support plates, sealing strips, and sometimes floating head components or U-bend sections. When Super Duplex UNS S32750 is used for the tube bundle, the design can withstand aggressive fluids while maintaining high heat transfer performance. For refinery maintenance projects, replacing a failed carbon steel, 316L, or duplex 2205 tube bundle with Super Duplex S32750 can significantly improve corrosion resistance and reduce the risk of repeated tube leakage.

Super Duplex S32750 tube bundles are commonly used in refinery overhead condensers, crude unit heat exchangers, sour water coolers, seawater-cooled exchangers, hydroprocessing units, amine coolers, LPG and gas processing coolers, vacuum unit condensers, and process fluid coolers. They are also suitable for replacement tube bundles in existing exchangers where the shell is still usable but the original tubes have suffered corrosion, scaling, erosion, or leakage. In many cases, a customized removable tube bundle is more economical than replacing the complete heat exchanger.

One major advantage of Super Duplex UNS S32750 is its high strength. The material has much higher yield strength than austenitic stainless steels such as 316L. This can allow thinner tube walls in some designs, depending on pressure code requirements, corrosion allowance, and mechanical calculation. Higher strength also helps the tube bundle resist vibration, pressure cycling, and mechanical stress during refinery operation. However, material strength alone is not enough. The tube bundle must still be designed carefully for flow-induced vibration, thermal expansion, baffle spacing, tube support, pressure drop, and maintenance access.

For refinery applications, tube-to-tube-sheet joint quality is critical. Vrcoolertech can manufacture Super Duplex tube bundles with expanded joints, seal welding, strength welding, or expanded plus welded joints according to the project specification. Welding of Super Duplex requires strict control of heat input, shielding gas, filler material, interpass temperature, and post-weld cleaning to maintain the correct ferrite-austenite balance and avoid loss of corrosion resistance. Poor welding practice can reduce the performance of Super Duplex material, so fabrication control is just as important as material selection.

The design of the tube bundle must also consider the actual fluid characteristics. If the tube side handles seawater or cooling water, proper tube velocity is needed to reduce fouling and avoid sediment deposition. If the velocity is too low, deposits may form and create crevice corrosion risk. If the velocity is too high, erosion may increase, especially when the water contains sand or suspended solids. If the shell side handles viscous process fluid, crude oil, or hydrocarbon mixture, the baffle cut, baffle spacing, and tube layout must be selected to balance heat transfer and pressure drop. For refinery service, thermal performance and mechanical reliability must be designed together.

Super Duplex UNS S32750 tube bundles can be manufactured in different structural forms, including straight tube fixed tube sheet bundles, removable tube bundles, U-tube bundles, floating head bundles, and replacement bundles based on existing exchanger drawings. For refinery maintenance, a removable tube bundle is often preferred because it allows easier inspection, cleaning, retubing, and replacement. If the process fluid is dirty or fouling is expected, the design should allow mechanical cleaning access and suitable tube layout. For high-value refinery equipment, ease of maintenance directly affects downtime and operating cost.

Material traceability is also important for refinery projects. Super Duplex tube bundles should be supplied with material certificates, chemical composition records, mechanical test reports, pressure test records, welding documentation, and inspection reports according to the customer’s quality requirements. Common inspection options include dimensional inspection, hydrostatic test, pneumatic test, dye penetrant testing, radiographic testing for selected welds, PMI testing, and ferrite content checking. These quality controls help confirm that the tube bundle meets refinery service requirements before installation.

Vrcoolertech can customize Super Duplex UNS S32750 tube bundles according to customer drawings, original heat exchanger dimensions, process data, pressure rating, temperature rating, corrosion requirements, and applicable standards. The tube size, tube thickness, tube pitch, tube layout, tube sheet thickness, baffle material, baffle spacing, support plate design, nozzle arrangement, and sealing structure can all be designed according to the actual application. For replacement projects, Vrcoolertech can manufacture the new tube bundle to match the existing shell, channel head, gasket surface, and installation interface.

A Super Duplex UNS S32750 tube bundle is a strong solution for refinery heat exchangers operating in corrosive, high-pressure, or high-chloride environments. With excellent corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength, reliable fabrication, and customized design, it helps refineries reduce leakage risk, extend maintenance intervals, and improve heat exchanger reliability. For refinery operators facing repeated tube failures or severe corrosion problems, upgrading to a Super Duplex S32750 tube bundle can be a practical and long-term solution.
