Complete Tube Bundle Assembly for Crude Stabilizer Reboiler
Time :Jul 15, 2026

A complete tube bundle assembly for a crude stabilizer reboiler is a critical heat transfer component used in oil and gas processing plants, refineries, and crude stabilization units. In a stabilizer system, the reboiler supplies the heat required to strip light ends from the stabilizer liquid, helping control vapor pressure and produce a more stable hydrocarbon product. Because the reboiler operates with high-temperature heating medium, hydrocarbon liquid, pressure containment requirements, and possible sour service conditions, the tube bundle must be manufactured with strong mechanical integrity, accurate dimensional control, and reliable tube-to-tubesheet sealing.

Complete Tube Bundle Assembly for Crude Stabilizer Reboiler

For this crude stabilizer reboiler service, the unit is a horizontal BKU type shell and tube heat exchanger, connected in series, with a heat transfer surface of 521.2 ft² for one shell. The shell side fluid is stabilizer liquid, while the tube side fluid is Sunoil 21 heating medium. The operating duty is 3,840,384 BTU/hr, with the shell side heated from 153.7°F to 273.7°F and the tube side heating medium cooled from 520°F to 455°F. The corrected mean temperature difference is 212.14°F, with a service transfer rate of 34.7 BTU/hr·ft²·°F and a clean transfer rate of 46.7 BTU/hr·ft²·°F.

The tube bundle design uses 69 U-tubes made from SA-179, with 3/4 inch outside diameter, 0.083 inch wall thickness, 19 ft tube length, and 15/16 inch triangular pitch. This U-tube construction is suitable for reboiler service because it allows thermal expansion between the tube bundle and shell, which is important when the tube side heating medium operates at high temperature. The bundle assembly includes the tubes, stationary tube sheet, baffles, supports, tie rods, spacers, and related internal components required to fit into the existing shell and maintain correct flow distribution.

The design conditions show that the shell side is designed for 100 psig and the tube side for 500 psig, with test pressures of 150 psig and 750 psig respectively. The design temperature is -20°F to 500°F on the shell side and -20°F to 600°F on the tube side. These values show why the tube bundle must be treated as a pressure-retaining refinery component rather than a simple replacement coil. The bundle must be manufactured according to the specified pressure class, material requirements, dimensional tolerances, and inspection standard.

Material selection is also important for this reboiler. The shell material is SA-516-70, the stationary tube sheet is SA-516-70, the channel or bonnet is SA-106 B, and the channel cover is SA-234 WPB or SA-516-70. The cross baffles are SA-36 full-support type. The tube-to-tubesheet joint is specified as rolled with double ring grooves, which improves mechanical grip and sealing reliability between the tubes and tube sheet. This type of joint is commonly used in heat exchanger tube bundles where a strong expanded joint is required to reduce leakage risk during thermal cycling and pressure operation.

For refinery stabilizer reboiler operation, flow arrangement and pressure drop must be controlled carefully. The shell side pressure drop is listed as 0.5 psi allowable and 0.08 psi calculated, while the tube side pressure drop is 5.0 psi allowable and 1.73 psi calculated. This low pressure drop design helps maintain process stability and avoids unnecessary pumping or circulation loss. The fouling resistance is specified as 0.002 hr·ft²·°F/BTU on both shell side and tube side, which indicates that the thermal design includes allowance for deposit formation during operation.

A complete tube bundle assembly for this application should be manufactured as a ready-to-install replacement package. The tube bundle must match the original exchanger geometry, including tube layout, tube sheet drilling, baffle spacing, support arrangement, U-bend radius, bundle length, nozzle clearance, and insertion dimensions. The reference drawing shows the overall exchanger arrangement, end view, tube layout, tube hole detail, baffle detail, tubesheet detail, and bundle assembly layout, which are essential for manufacturing a replacement bundle that can fit the existing reboiler shell correctly.

Vrcooler can manufacture complete tube bundle assemblies for crude stabilizer reboilers according to customer drawings, data sheets, and site replacement requirements. The scope can include tube procurement, tube bending, tube sheet machining, baffle fabrication, bundle assembly, tube rolling, dimensional inspection, hydrostatic testing, NDT, material certificates, and packing for site installation. For replacement projects, accurate reverse engineering and drawing confirmation are especially important because even small differences in tube sheet thickness, bolt holes, baffle position, or bundle length can affect installation.

A reliable crude stabilizer reboiler tube bundle helps maintain stable heat input to the stabilizer column, reduce shutdown risk, and extend equipment service life. With correct material selection, U-tube fabrication, rolled double-grooved tube joints, refinery-grade inspection, and compliance with ASME and TEMA requirements, Vrcooler can provide a complete tube bundle assembly suitable for demanding crude stabilization and refinery reboiler service.
