What is a turbine guide-bearing oil cooler?

A turbine guide-bearing oil cooler is a heat exchanger used to remove heat from the lubricating oil circulating through a turbine’s guide-bearing system. It is commonly installed in hydroelectric, steam and other turbine-generator plants where guide bearings keep the rotating shaft correctly aligned and limit radial movement.


During operation, friction within the bearing and heat transferred from nearby components increase the oil temperature. The hot oil flows through the cooler, where it transfers heat to cooling water without the two fluids mixing. The cooled oil then returns to the bearing lubrication system. Most guide-bearing oil coolers use a shell-and-tube design because it withstands continuous operation, pressure fluctuations and demanding power-plant conditions.


Maintaining the correct oil temperature preserves lubricant viscosity and oil-film strength. If the oil becomes too hot, its viscosity decreases, weakening the protective film between the bearing and shaft. This can cause increased vibration, bearing wear, oil oxidation and, in severe cases, turbine shutdown.


Depending on water quality, tubes can be made from copper, Cu-Ni, stainless steel or titanium. Removable tube bundles are often preferred because they simplify inspection, cleaning and replacement. Cooler selection should consider heat load, oil type and viscosity, oil and water flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures, operating pressure, allowable pressure drop, water quality and installation dimensions.
